What People Are Saying
We rely on our reputation as our greatest marketing tool. We believe that when you read what others have experienced at our school it is the best way in this digital age to show that we do what we say we do. The following testimonials are the best way we know how to show that your investment of time, effort and money in your business by using our services will be worthwhile. We do not hand pick only a few students feedback to be listed here, but we list all feedback as we receive it (we may condense some feedback for readability and space).
When we came (we) didn't know the difference between many drinks. By the end of (our two day private class) (we were) able to make most drinks on (our) own. The class was informative. The hands on was exactly what (we) needed and invaluable. We feel that in after our class we have come away much more confident in what we are doing and have confirmed many of our decisions.
Very good experience. Thank you!

from MBS - Val was probably the oldest student we've had through our school and a Russian immigrant. Val built a successful floral shop and recently added a cafe to his location. Val has built his businesses, and his life in the US, with determination, hard work, a great service attitude and the teamwork of his wonderful family. He is a shining example of what is possible for anyone in America, especially since Val spoke no english only 20 years ago. Val recently sent us a letter celebrating their first anniversary. We asked him if we could share a portion of it with you;
Dearest Jack,
Whether or not you have realized it, two days ago was the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of Cafe Flora opening up!! We can barely believe that it has been a whole year since you and Alex were here helping us with the grand opening! Much has happened in the past year and we wanted to let you know that everything is going GREAT!
We're over the one-year hurdle and things are looking very good. We have you, Alex, and everyone at MBS to thank for being such a huge part of the cafe being a success. We cannot imagine what it would be like if you had not been there to help us start everything up. We do know that the cafe would not have been such a great success without you and we are eternally grateful to you! You know that if you are ever around Jersey you are welcome here, and we hope that you do come visit again sometime! How is everything at JP's and MBS? Hopefully everyone there is well and everything is going better than ever!
Happy New Year and wishes for a great year ahead!
Much Love, Val, Olga & Julie

I chose MBS as my coffee school of choice because mainly (of the) feedbacks on (the) website. There are no words to explain my experience at the Midwest Barista School, just five star!!!.
Everyone at the Midwest Barista School is awesome and I highly recommend this school for anyone who wants to learn about coffee.
Thank you so much.
—Eun Lee, South Korea
We chose MBS because they train people with their experience at an actual coffee shop.
The training program is designed wonderfully. Within two days we got a good view of the coffee industry, a basic idea of what we need to start a coffee shop. We were taught in the classroom and also were trained hand by hand on the espresso machines. The owner and trainer were fantastic! They are doing everything in a decent way with the best knowledge and experience.
—Chuck and Dawn Keltz, Summerville SC
I learned of JP's Coffee and MBS through our coffee roaster. After several visits to observe their coffeehouse, I was very impressed with the quality and passion that I noted throughout the workforce. From new hires to their baristas, trainers, and managers, this was clearly an establishment of "coffee geeks" that took their craft seriously.
As a multi-unit operator, I have faced significant challenges in assuring effective training, and producing consistently high quality beverages. It was my hope that working with MBS to develop a custom training program offsite of our location would allow us to take our training and product quality to a higher level. I was especially grateful that MBS was willing and very able to customize their program to our operations, and not simply slide us into a "cookie cutter" training program
It was clear that the group of employees I selected to attend this first class were won over almost instantly. The atmosphere was warm and enthusiastic. I was impressed at the ability of the teaching group to create a program that dovetailed so well with our current training. It provided an ideal "Next Step".
I most enjoyed seeing the excitement in my staff as they watched their skills progress at such a rapid pace. To have simply been able to create perfect mircofoam time after time would've been a huge step for many of these people. Seeing them pour rosettas and hearts the same day blew me away!
As a "food first" cafe, we targeted beverages as our most significant opportunity for growth in our markets last year. The strides we are making, thanks to the training at MBS will certainly elevate us above any similar competition in our areas. I've yet to see a concept similar to ours that is able to produce the quality of drinks that we now can. In addition, most of our competition would be lucky to describe perfect shots and perfect milk, let alone produce them with any degree of consistency.
—Andy Fochtman, Director of Operations for Multi-unit Bagel Beanery Grand Rapids, MIFOLLOW UP: The quality of drinks my staff has been producing has been surging upward since the supplemental training at MBS. A lot of this due to the peer pressure of the new "experts" keeping their eyes on everything. Between the training (MBS) and I did this summer, some of my initiatives and the recent "train the trainers" we did, we've been very pleased. November of 2008 we were selling a coffee or espresso-type beverage to 36% of our guests. As of November 2009 we are at 52%. Now that's the right direction!
I would like to schedule another class sometime before 2nd quarter next year, most likely in late February or early march.
We chose MBS for a few reasons: location, course selection, flexibility of times, the professional look of and testimonies on their website, and their willingness to provide custom training.
(MBS) first wanted to understand our goals and provide insight into our future operation. (They) tailored the training to our needs. They are very willing to share their vast knowledge of coffees and barista experience.
The information provided is detailed, interesting and most of all relevant for the prospective barista and coffee retailer. (MBS) cares to know class members, to discover their goals and ambitions. This helps to establish a relationship, but also to provide a valuable evaluation in preparation of opening a retail operation. The hands on training is focused and aimed at perfecting the techniques necessary to create the perfect espresso drink!
Thanks!
—Dennis and Linda Burmeister, Lake in the Hills, IL
Good hands-on training coupled with discussions provided valuable information as a foundation to my business plan. (Being trained at) an operating business was a plus, a much better educational experience than just a classroom/training setting. The wisdom and insight of business owners/managers is valuable to me as I finalize my plans for my business.
—Mark Weir, Mount Prospect IL
I chose MBS because of their location, reputation and cost. I had a wonderful time and feel I learned a lot to help me make educated decisions in opening my own coffeehouse. I enjoyed the atmosphere, seeing an operating coffeehouse in action - priceless and at no time did I feel I was in the way. LOVE the staff and customers!
I so appreciate Sherry and Jack's willingness to be open and transparent - no question is "too stupid" or off limits. And Terika's excitement when I finally produced a rosette?? PRICELESS!!
Thanks for everything.
—Crystal Douglas, Winnebago IL
Jack and crew were wonderful hosts and I felt individually cared about. They are very passionate about this business, but also for the success of each student and coffeehouse.
I am amazed at the transparency you (MBS) offer - your generousness regarding "inside business" i.e. secrets of the trade. The information and education are invaluable. I leave with great confidence as a barista and owner. This experience proved to be an "investment" in my success as a coffeehouse owner.
Thank you so much!
—Pamela Donnan, Crystal Lake, IL
The testimonials (on this website) were convincing and as a novice in the coffee business I was not intimidated by the class descriptions. Also, conversation with Jack confirmed that he could communicate coffee and business.
The classes were well structured with time appropriately segmented between "seat time" and behind the bar experience. I'm not quite certain how they do it, but the staff at MBS keep you in a comfort zone. They are nurturing without being overbearing.
I love you guys!!
—Denise Crowell, Hendersonville NC
MBS was an awesome experience! Great people from management to dishwasher. All areas covered wonderfully and in laymen terms. There was time given individually as needed and all questions were answered.
Every moment was memorable. I felt like I belonged and I wasn't just another number coming thru the door. The consultation they offer and their willingness to correspond as questions and issues arrive give me the advantage in my business.
YOU ALL ROCK! TWO THUMBS UP!
—Darcy Krumroy, Piqua OH (soon coastal NC!)
We chose MBS for the following reasons:
-Great feedback from previous graduates/students
-Good customer service on the phone
-The most thorough training and smallest class size with hands-on training. It was great to be able to focus on our business concept and learn both from hands-on practice and class time; as well as the nuggets of wisdom that come from true experience (we really enjoyed the real life stories and experiences shared in class). I (Azael) enjoyed the feeling of pride I had when I served (free) drinks to JP's customers and realized, "Oh yeah, I can do this" (with lots of practice of course).
We are confident we are on the right track and because of MBS will avoid costly mistakes. Thank you!
—Azael and Lisa Meza, Minocqua WI
I came to MBS because I wanted to learn from someone who has been/is in the business and is succeeding! Jack, Sherry and company really seem to know their stuff. I would definitely recommend this school to anyone hoping to go into the retail coffee business. The thing I appreciated most was Jack's insightfulness. Before I knew practically nothing about coffee and now I feel much more confident that I can succeed!
—Ted Revell, Murrieta CA
I had my very first espresso, latte and cappuccino ever at MBS (during my class session). The staff taught me a lot and never tired of answering my questions. As I go home I feel as though MBS is there for me, just a phone call or email away.
—Vickie Harris, Hot Springs AR
The Midwest Barista School was knowledgeable, friendly, consistent and really care about my future. Every minute was memorable!
—Ann McNeeley, Northfield OH
I chose MBS because I wanted a reputable expert with a track record of personal success, as well as a history of helping others succeed.
I had a very informative week, jam packed with techniques, tips and Q&A. My lasting impression is that by example MBS (and JP's) has proved that it is possible to create a culture of passion for this industry that is capable of penetrating every level of employee.
—Andy Fochtman, Grand Rapids MI
After doing web research on various schools, MBS's website solidified my choosing them. They have phenomenal industry experience and expertise. Tie that together with passion, a well organized training manual and a practical coffee training bar and that leads to a well rounded and incredibly in-depth and practical course.
Visiting the roaster (on the roaster tour) opened my eyes to some of the vital needs for the coffee industry. The time spent practicing the creation of drinks and latte art developed confidence that an (only educational) class can't provide.
—Christopher Godwaldt, Hamilton Ontario CA
I was a walk-in student (JP's customer who found the school), but in all honesty am glad it worked out the way it did. The drinks took on a new meaning to me as an owner. My baristas will learn from my experience and hopefully my business will be furthered because of my time here. The advantages of knowledge of proper technique, execution and ability will give me the advantage I need.
—Brad Engen, Dallas TX
MBS was our school of choice and we really appreciated attending the private training with a small class, fun atmosphere and at a cheaper price (than the competition). It was a great experience with a lot of hands on experience. In addition, MBS really helped in all areas of the business as well.
I knew nothing about coffee when I arrived and now I feel like a 'professional' in the coffee business!
—Sunny Kim, Dallas TX
We chose MBS because of its ability to work so well with us, the soon-to-be students.
It was as if I was given a new set of eyes to see what coffee truly is. (This will help me deliver) a greater experience for each sip of coffee or whatever drink it may be. The advantages of MBS are too many to list: from basics of equipment to various learned skills and then the continuous contact after the training is over. Everything was just GREAT!
—Susie Kim, Dallas TX
I attended a private 2 day class prior to this and it was just what I needed at that time to get started preparing for our coffee house. MBS was a wealth of information and from there we began to put together a plan for success.
(Attending MBS) was a delightful experience and I learned so much in 5 days. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and it is obvious that they wanted me to be successful. The humility and respect modeled by their employees to each one of us will be a great lasting impression.
—Cheryl Wells, Le Mars IA
After attending a 2 day private class with MBS I felt attending the 5 day class was going to be a great fit for the preparing and planning for our coffee shop. My experience was awesome and I felt like I received a lot of information - now I can go home and plan for success. I think my favorite part was the afternoon we spent doing only latte art.

—Raul Mongenyip, San Diego CA
The thing that appealed to me was getting trained in a successful store setting. Their great website and the fact that the class cost much less than the other schools I looked at led me to choose MBS.
It is a wonderful program and covered coffee history, growing, purchasing, roasting, brewing and running a coffee shop. The training gave me the confidence behind the bar that I did not have, nor thought I'd have so quickly. I still need to perfect it, but I am on my way.
—Heidi Carter, Marquette MI
ABC's WZZM13 in Grand Rapids, MI did a story on the Midwest Barista School. Students Sarah and Jordan O'Leary were interviewed for the article and accompanying video piece. Following is an excerpt:
![]()
"The Midwest Barista School draws students from across the country, and internationally as well. Jordan O'Leary and his wife Sarah drove 14 hours for the training. Jordan says "every single second was worth it."
The O'Learys hope to bring some of JP's success back to their new coffee shop, the "Morning Owl." "Ottawa really doesn't have anything like this so we are really excited to bring it to Ottawa, all the flavored lattes, all the different syrups, the perfect shot of espresso. We are really excited to bring that back home," says Jordan.
The O'Learys feel like members of the JP's family, and want West Michigan to feel like part of theirs, so if you are ever in Ottawa "Come on down to the Morning Owl coffee house, for sure, absolutely," says Jordan. There you can expect a stellar espresso creation thanks to their West Michigan training.
My lasting impression of MBS is when I created latte art. I couldn't believe they taught me all that in such a short period of time. It was amazing. I think (the training) will change our entire business. We have so much to offer... knowledge and skills that our competition doesn't. I really feel that they truly cared about our success as a business! I learned so much. - Sarah"

I chose MBS because the curriculum appeared to be equivalent to competitors who were charging almost twice as much!... as well as Jack's (and the team's) experience. MBS led a very fun, very organized, very information-packed week with the absolute highest of standards relayed daily.
This week has inspired me to learn even more and prepare even more to succeed. The MBS crew is both very realistic and very inspirational. The hands-on barista training in the cafe' (environment), especially the hours we spent serving real customers was invaluable. (Thanks for making me a) coffee snob, which is especially significant given I started out the week as a non-coffee drinker!
—S. Wistrom, Fort Smith MT

Jack and Sherry,
I want to formally thank and praise your training team and store staff. Now that I am up and running in my store at full speed, I've realized how much and how valuable the information was that I was taught at Midwest Barista School. What I learned with you is making a huge difference in the quality of product and therefore the overall service of my coffee and tea house. The education that I received both in class and behind the bar training have been vital in all aspects of my business. From the selection process when sourcing my product line,to the confidence I have with customers and vendors when making drinks or selections for the store. Spending time with Alex and Jonathan when learning to work behind the bar was as fun as it was interesting.I am a far better coffee shop owner and barista for attending your classes and watching you and your associates run your business. I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to work with you. On the drive home, I told my wife and I have uttered many times since, that it was the best money I have ever spent in my life.
Sincerely,

Wanted to be the best so took classes with the best. I learned a lot to take back to Iowa City to train our staff the right way. Great people who are great teachers.
—Korey Kriz Iowa City, Iowa
The experience has been very informative, both with the knowledge shared and the hands on experience. I feel this has been an important and crucial part of what will become of our coffee bar - giving me the confidence to train and the passion to keep learning. I loved making drinks for (JP's) customers and seeing their reactions - I also really enjoyed the roaster (tour) and trying a fresh coffee bean. MBS training will help make our coffee bar a cut above the rest
—Brooke Brewer Iowa City, Iowa
I needed help! And found your site on the internet. Read your articles and knew you would be right for me. It was a great experience and I will "live every minute" from your direction. I loved making drinks for YOUR customers. This is very intimidating, but a great experience. MBS is a "must have". You can't go into the coffee business without knowing your stuff
—Nancy Hayes Elkhart, IN
Thanks for the CD's (People and Stuff)! I've already been playing with them, modifying them for our needs... Thanks so much, you have been a huge asset!
We went to a local roaster yesterday in (location). We were already in the area (picking out our flooring) and were told that this was an "award winning" roaster with the most fabulous coffee in Metro Detroit, so we stopped by. All I can say is that I feel sorry for Metro Detroit... My jaw was in the floor the whole time. These people knew NOTHING about coffee. The samples they offered us for taste testing were "Kona" and were terrible. We asked when it was brewed... 8am. It was 2pm when we tasted it. They brewed us a fresh pot on our request and used only about 1/3 of the coffee that should have been used for the pot. It was the color of weak tea and tasted accordingly.
Honestly, after going through the week long class and the tour at (your roaster), I felt so qualified when talking to these people and was very confident in my "ew" opinion and not only knew that I didn't like it, but knew that they were not qualified to make the coffee that I want to serve in my shop. Again, thank you, thank you for such a great experience and for giving me the confidence to start this business off on the right foot.

Hey Jack, I hope all is going well with you, Sherry and Alex (and all of your extended families). I wanted to drop you a line to let you know how much I enjoyed the class, but more importantly, how much I learned in the class. I've told several people here that when I went to Holland for the class, I went with the timid attitude, I am starting a cafe" and left with the attitude, I AM OPENING A WONDERFUL, SUCCESSFUL CAFE". I really feel like I gained a confidence that I otherwise did not possess and I believe that by displaying this confidence, I will instill a positive CAN DO" attitude among my employees and customers alike. Thank you (and Sherry and Alex) for getting me here!
—Natalie Park, Ann Arbor, MI
The awakening (of my knowledge), what I never knew, is unbelievable. What a great learning experience. A lasting impression is how open and knowledgeable Jack and staff are.
—Jim Mondanaro, Iowa City, Iowa
[I enjoyed the] low key, easy pace, time to experiment atmosphere with a knowledgeable staff. Alex took extra time with me because I am a home barista
—Paul Francescutti, Waterloo, Ontario, CA
My experience at (MBS) was very rewarding and very informative for a new owner. I enjoyed being able to serve real customers, to get their approval of the drinks we made and the feeling of success. Also knowing that we will have the advantage of making a good espresso for our customers and be a better manager and understanding the workings of the coffee trade.
—Charles Shaw, Jr., King George, VA
My experience was great. Everyone was knowledgeable and taught me a lot. I was very surprised at the amount I learned in just 5 days. The lasting impression I will take is how friendly and personable everyone was. Seeing and having the hands-on training of the daily operations has been a big plus - It helps to put into perspective what (operating our own store) is really going to be like.
—Crystal Shaw-Davis, King George, VA
Dear Jack, Sherry and Alex,
I had a dream to start a coffee business but had no idea where to begin. After 5 days in your school, I had the opportunity to learn a lot about the business, the history behind it, how coffee is grown, roasted and processed. I learned how to make the perfect shot of espresso, different coffee drinks, how to make milk foam, high quality products and even art latte.
Your school is excellent with very friendly, highly intelligent and professional teachers who were all extremely helpful and informative. Everyone there has many years of experience with the coffee business and have an obvious love for the school and it's students. And the learning facility is not just a classroom made like a cafe, but an actual functioning successful cafe where I was surprised to see that between 6am and 11pm there are at least 20-40 people constantly sitting, enjoying their coffee and talking.
It is a truly amazing school and I am grateful to have had the chance to learn there. I feel now that with my newly acquired knowledge from your school, my dream of a coffee business can come true. Many thanks and appreciation to all of your staff and teachers for creating such an excellent and friendly barista education!
Sincerely,
—Val Bakhrakh, Cherry Hill New Jersey
My boss attended MBS and wanted me to attend to learn about coffee and barista training, so I can train others at our new cafe. I learned a tremendous amount of info... which was a huge advantage. Since I have learned the correct techniques to making a great espresso, I know it will set me apart from the competition.
—Colleen Tilden, Muskegon MI
Very good instruction on coffee history. Great hands on training making coffees. Wonderful experience and knowledge of equipment. MBS provides great training for all employees and sets the benchmark to go by.
—James McKenna, Columbus GA
I felt the experience was well worth the effort. It gave me a sense of what coffees are all about.
—Tony Stefanelli, Erie PA
Loved the one-on-one training and the freedom to ask questions and train hands-on with people who do this every day for a living. (Us all) having shared experiences in coffee shops made the experience richer.
—Danielle Walker, Erie PA
I enjoyed learning new and improved techniques for dosing, extracting, steaming, etc. (and it) makes returning to work exciting. All of these new methods will bring a much greater quality to our efforts
—Jennifer Stefanelli, Erie PA
Very informative: I have learned so much, as there are so many functions to running a coffeehouse, that this has been and will continue to be very helpful. Even sitting to go over the daily functions, I wouldn't know what to do without this!
—Jamie Sewell, Belvidere IL
I believe this training has given us the ability to make the greatest coffee in the country. Knowing that I can make any drink the right way, offering the finest in quality and excellence. I'm very thankful for the information (and patience with inexperience) that the Midwest Barista School offers.
—Matthew Weaver, Millersburg OH
Attending was well worth the time and effort and is a great spring board to a successful coffee shop! We appreciated the grace and humble excellence of the instructors. And this class gave me the understanding of the national standard set by great baristas. It will certainly help me develop and excel in this business
—Wayne Weaver, Sugarcreek OH

—Genaro Vasquez, Austin TX
I felt the school was very informative. The information was presented in such a way that I grasped it easily. I was thoroughly impressed with the instructors. Not only were they very informative, but they each had a sincere desire for the school and the lessons presented. This class was well worth the money spent.
—Nelson McDaniels, Franklin KY
The class was very informative, comprehensive and enjoyable. Jack, Sherry and Alex were all transparent and helpful. I would recommend it to others in search of such an education. I will also take from it a general feeling of confidence in providing good service to the public I will be relating to. The theme of excellence in product and customer service will enhance the experience that others have at our store
—Seth Kempf, Washington IL
The lasting impression that I will take with me from the MBS is that hard work pays off in the end. Upon reflection on the past week I have come to realize that it is very rare to find a coffee shop or restaurant that serves quality coffee such as JP's the reason being most concentrate on the food stuff & neglect the quality of the coffee they are serving. Jack has proved that the other way around can work as well. That is a Niche to tap into. Well done Jack, Sherry and Alex! Great hands-on training with excellent teachers.
Being trained in a coffee shop that is full of customers made the whole difference for me. As a coffee distributor I needed to understand how coffee shops operate & what the daily problems they are faced with are. After my training I am able to put myself in the shoes of that coffee shop manager/owner & find a solution to his problems & ultimately delivering the perfect shot. I am not sure they are going to be pleased with what I have to say as JP's set the bar very high for me as far as the quality of the shot that needs to be delivered!
—Amer Arab, Montreal, QC, Canada and Dubai UAE
Great hands-on practical experience. Not only was Jack and staff gracious with their time, nothing was spared to limit our hands-on coffee training. ...being witness to JP's thriving business, I came to learn how to make a coffee shop successful (and ) I see what to strive for.
—Lorin W. Tate, Washington DC
I soon realized after adding up my week's expenses that I still had a big smile on my face. The Midwest Barista School was worth every penny. From day 1 to day 5 I learned something new everyday and will be able to apply it to my personal business venture. I also learned that quality separates you from the competition. I have also been given this chance to network and make many contacts for supplies, suppliers and also meet great people sharing the same dream. My most lasting impression is the enormous improvements I made on being a barista. I went from no clue on how to pull a shot to pouring hearts in lattes. It was really unbelievable.
—Jordan O'Leary, Ottawa, Ontario, CA
The 5 day New Business Owner class was exceptional. It contained a great mix of background information and education, hands-on experience and business training. It has been extremely valuable to me. The entire experience has been memorable from the hands-on making of drinks, having a customer tell me the drink I made him was great to the tour of the roastery. Jack and Sherry were excellent teachers. I feel like I now know how to do things the right way...quality is so important and we were given and excellent foundation to provide quality products and customer service. Thank you so much!
—Karen Pauer, Madison, WI
Very informative and generous with insider information.
—Kim Huffman, Cloverdale IN
A complete barista experience. I learned so much more than I thought I would - not to mention that I've been drinking a lot of really bad coffee. I couldn't have imagined getting into the coffee business without knowing what I learned in this course. It was like getting 14 years of experience in 3 days. Thank you for your help. I look forward to working with you in the future.
And a follow up email from the same student: Thank you again for all of your advice and instruction. I got more out of your class than I even realized, I'm reading a book on coffee producing countries and I would not have understood a word of it two weeks ago.
—Mike Crowe, Lorain OH

Really enjoyed the class. Would love to take more, but have a store to run. I've known Jack for a few years and my parents have known him for many years, as they were one of the first Coffee Beanery franchisees in MI (Jack used to purchase coffee from them in the years before going into business). I will definitely take the advanced training back into my business.
—Douglas Bowman, Grand Rapids MI
Thanks for the excellent class. Both Mila and I felt the course we took was very relevant to our needs and that you understand the training needs of people like us in the industry. We only wish we could afford the time to take the longer class. We wish you all the best in your business and personal life.

Thanks to the both of you for such a wonderful learning experience & a great environment.
—Dee Weeks, Huxley IA
Thanks so much for all your help! I really enjoyed the class.
—Lisa Volkman, Phelps WI
The class was great. Thanks for everything. A couple things to add for future additions to the class: I'd love a hands-on coffee cupping segment and also a segment on bar layout. Sherry and I had a great conversation and she helped me get some really good info. I just think future students will benefit as well.
Thanks again, Julie.
—Julie Gibson, East Lansing, MI
This week was a wonderful experience. I felt that there was a good blend of professionalism and "casualism". The atmosphere was relaxed, but very informative. I learned SOOO much and am so glad I decided to come. I will feel so much more confident about opening up our coffee house. Good blend of explaining how important the coffee end is, the business end is, and the customer end is.
—Rebecca (Becky) Kempf, Eureka IL
I feel incredibly blessed to have come here and been treated so wonderful. You have paid attention to personal detail (just like the whole business [you run]). [You] let us talk and ask questions and tailor answers to us! I felt important to you. Thank you so much. I now have a great foundation to step off from.
—Yvonne Andresen, Eureka IL
I'm very glad I attended this class. I had no idea what I was getting into when I signed up... and I gained a lot of knowledge through this class.
—Erin Smith, Kokomo IN
Most of all I just wanted to convey a heart-felt thanks to you, Sherry and staff for everything. We are still "buzzing" from all that we learned while attending the MBS. Your comprehensive format and supplemental items that we purchased from you were just what we needed. The excitement just keeps on brewing! Okay, enough with the puns, right? We can't help it though - we're just so "Juiced" up. ;-) I appreciate the extras and the care taken by [MBS] to convey the overall views of management & ownership of a coffee business.
—Mike McCreary, Terre Haute IN
You guys are great - very inspiring, informative, and forthcoming with info & willingness to elaborate as needed.

Working with Jack was both fun and refreshing. He shares our Midwestern values and helped us to streamline our processes so that we could focus our efforts on the customer... We saw immediate, measurable improvement within days of working with Jack and it's only improving with time. You rock, Jack Attack.
—Danny O'Neill, The Roasterie Kansas City MO
The On Track CDs were well worth the money I spent. I have been in business for over a year and that first year is overwhelming... so many decisions that need to be made. I wish I would have had this information in the beginning. The Employee Handbook alone was worth the price. It is simple to change the contents to fit your own company policies. It is obvious that a lot of time went into creating these forms and guidelines. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us 'newbies'.
—Lisa Spyker, Defiance OH
It (the Template CDs) had a lot of useful documents that I can use in all aspects of my business. Editing the existing documents saved me time and allowed me to focus on other areas in the startup of our shop!
—Geoff Corey, Pheasant Creek Coffee Apex NC
The CD's have been a great resource since we are starting our business from the bottom up with no previous experience in the retail coffee industry. We found the CD's to be extremely practical and professionally done.
Jack's service for layout helped tremendously. I really appreciated his willingingness to work with us on several layouts until we had the best one for situation. He offered advice and suggestions, but was not overly possessive about "his" design.
—Mark Blest, New Holland Coffee Company New Holland PA
Before I met him I didn't know "Jack" about the business of "Jo". Here I thought was a very successful guy who has been in the business for years sharing his experience with "newbies" like me. I met Jack in person at Coffee Fest in Chicago and decided I had to see his shop. JP's became my model so much so that I feel like I am now running "JP's South".
—Joe Voris, Mighty Joe Espresso Tucker GA
I retained On Track Coffee Consulting to assist me in the opening of the Elk River Coffee Company in Tennessee. They have been an outstanding partner in this effort and I would recommend them to anyone pursuing a similar venture.
—Jim Roark, Elk River Coffee Company Fayetteville TN
...Their experience was a definite advantage to our success. They helped us...and trained our baristas not only how to make drinks that our customers love but to also have fun with them.
—Tammy Watson, Riverfront Cafe Niles MI
I received your People CD yesterday and I absolutely love it! This CD has saved me HOURS of work at my computer, and I am so grateful. I can definitely see why it won Best New Product.
—Jennifer Cooper, Brown Bean Coffee House Freedonia NY
Thank you for everything you've put together on the CDs. They have helped me immensely. I have been able to shape the text to fit exactly who we are at our cafe. It would have taken me a month or more to do it, and I am a professional writer who is known to be fast.
—Thomas Fucci, Cafe' at the Vista Hollywood CA
...you were great. The training was thorough, well planned, and easy to understand. I think it was probably the best investment I could have made in this whole project.
—Brent Elrod, Java Surf Coffee House, Cordova TN
Dearest Jack,
We're over the one-year hurdle and things are looking very good.
I chose MBS as my coffee school of choice because mainly (of the) feedbacks on (the) website. There are no words to explain my experience at the Midwest Barista School, just five star!!!.
We chose MBS because they train people with their experience at an actual coffee shop.
We chose MBS for a few reasons: location, course selection, flexibility of times, the professional look of and testimonies on their website, and their willingness to provide custom training.
This was a wonderful opportunity to not only make quality coffee drinks, but also be taught what to do or not to do in opening a new coffee shop. I loved being able to learn latte art and learn from patient trainers. I know that MBS training will give me an edge on the competition by knowing more about quality coffee and preparing better drinks.
I chose MBS because the class curriculum seemed to be better than the other schools I researched. The classes were very well explained and the instructors were very good at teaching and explaining in detail the topics covered. I feel that MBS gave me the confidence needed to start and open my operation.
The thing that appealed to me was getting trained in a successful store setting. Their great website and the fact that the class cost much less than the other schools I looked at led me to choose MBS.
(The class) was very informative and certainly helpful in my continuation of becoming a better barista. It helped me become more consistent and I really enjoyed being able to speak with fellow baristas about coffee and different techniques.
I chose MBS because I attended a barista jam several months back and was impressed with the staff, presentation and the high level of expertise. The class was a great experience - a good balance of "text", class and practicum. Well paced, covering a spectrum of need to know information. Also, had fun in the process.
Coming to MBS was a great experience. I learned a lot about the many aspects of a good coffee business. I also learned I have a lot to learn and look forward to the road ahead. The training gave me the confidence behind the bar that I did not have, nor thought I'd have so quickly. I still need to perfect it, but I am on my way.
I can describe this experience in one word - WOW! It was an amazing experience. Everything was done above and beyond what I expected. We were treated like family.
(update from a student who teaches business at an Arkansas high school - the school opened a cafe' for students to run)
Sometimes you have to cross water to find the things that make most sense.
I learned so much I can't wait to get started. One of my most memorable moments was tasting the difference between a good shot and a bad shot! What a difference. The staff and trainers at MBS are so knowledgeable and have such a passion for coffee that is has rubbed off on me. I want to know all I can about coffee and MBS got me started.
